The Great White Pelican holds a unique and significant role in Israel's avian landscape, primarily as a migratory bird. Israel serves as a critical "bottleneck" on the Eurasian East African Flyway. The vast majority of the Great White Pelican population that breeds in Europe and Central Asia passes through Israel on its way to its wintering grounds in Africa. These birds often arrive with depleted energy reserves and must refuel to complete their long journey across the deserts of Sinai and the Sahara. Israel's Nature and Parks Authority has implemented a supplementary feeding program, providing tons of non-commercial fish to the pelicans at designated sites to help them with their journey.
