The European Roller is a vibrant and eye catching bird known for its brilliant blue and turquoise plumage. In Israel, it passes through the country during its long-distance journeys between its breeding grounds in Europe and Asia and its wintering grounds in sub-Saharan Africa. Some European Rollers also spend the summer in Israel, where they breed in the northern and central parts of the country, from the Golan Heights to the northwestern Negev. I was fortunate to find this Roller going from stem to stem in a field in the Judaen foothills looking for insects on its way through its migration. The species has faced population declines in some parts of Europe due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and a lack of suitable nesting sites. International efforts, which include collaboration with countries along their migratory routes like Israel, are crucial for the conservation of this remarkable bird.
